In his more than 40 years of painting and teaching the techniques mastered by his father, Mr. Ross has never had a single body of his original work displayed in a gallery. Entitled “Legacy: The Art of Steve Ross,” Mr. Ross will transcend the boundaries of classical landscapes painted in the “ala prima” technique or the technique more commonly known as “wet-in-wet” and the modern expression of the genre today. His work reveals a deep awareness, both visual and emotional, of how he has mastered, expanded and transcended the techniques first taught to him at the age of 10 by his famous father, and by default, William Alexander, as well as the classical technique. Impressionist movement in relation to the works of Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Manet and Matisse. Additionally, and in order to reinforce Ross’ legacy from father to son, an original painting of his father will also be on display.
“As Bethany Butler so eloquently wrote in her 2021 Washington Post article, “(The Ross’s) brought happiness to many as the sweet-voiced host(s) of ‘The Joy of Painting,” the long-running PBS show that taught viewers how to paint lush landscapes and vivid skies in less than 30 leisurely minutes,” said Michael J. Broderick, General Manager of Northern Waters Casino Resort. “We can’t express enough how excited and honored we feel to have been chosen by Steve to show his work in our gallery and to also have a painting studio for him and his dad’s fans. and interested performers. As always, we are delighted to offer our customers more than the ‘average’ casino experience. This show will be historic, and we can’t think of a more fitting setting than in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to share masterful work with the world.”
In Ross’s new paintings, the marks and traces of his father and family’s legacy merge with exciting new direction and exploration of their subjects, and the living, breathing, and natural forms his landscapes depict. . Each of Ross’s brushstrokes contains both the vibrancy, majesty and delicacy of “his worlds” in regards to unscathed and undisturbed nature. Their forms present the viewer with a very contemporary question of our role and relationship with the environment, while celebrating and appreciating it. Ultimately, it explores the even deeper question of a son’s truth and a father’s dying wish. It is a true celebration and a supreme event freed from the bonds of dishonesty and manipulation of humanity and corporate greed.
“I try to hold on to this moment and share it with the observer and the viewer, without any fear, pain, loss and preconceived notions. It’s really a catharsis and a new path to follow while keeping a Remembering – Steve Ross
