Mixed media is defined as a style of art where one uses different types of artistic mediums to create an artwork.
Combining visual art with non-visual elements in a single work of art is mixed media art like assemblages, collages and sculpture with paint, fabric, paper, wood, earth and more. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, multimedia artist Akshita Gandhi suggested:
1. Explore and experiment – The most important thing to remember is that mixed media is about exploring and experimenting with different mediums without any rules. You are free to work with textures, textiles, photographs, magazine cutouts, collages, and almost anything you can see or imagine. You are not limited to the number of supports you use and can even create 3D parts.
2. Have a base – It is essential to have a base, be it a paper, canvas or cardboard for you to add layers, you have something to hold them.
3. Learn new techniques – Be sure to keep learning new techniques and keep improving your skills to grow as an artist. You never know what new method might improve your work and take you to a whole new avenue of possibilities. Being complacent will work as a disadvantage for sure!
Adding to the list of tips, Madhavi Adaljia, an artist who creates bespoke art from resin, mosaic and canvas, recommended:
1. Let your ideas run free – In mixed media, the sky is the limit! Allow yourself to transform your life experiences into art. You have the flexibility to combine older materials with newer ones as an idea comes to mind and as there is no age barrier your artwork can have a variety of colors. explanations and can sound expressive and deep in its own way.
2. Basic understanding of drawing and painting – Colors are an important aspect of every artwork. Since mixing-media has no rules to follow, it is essential to have at least some knowledge about the different emotions and color palettes. Having a basic understanding will definitely do no harm to you or your artwork, in fact, you will be able to communicate your thoughts and feelings well when having a setback experience.
3. Tools – Multimedia art is not an expensive art form. You don’t have to worry about exceeding your requirements. You can create a masterpiece with the most basic things like knives, brushes, toothbrushes, sponges, straws, bubble wrap, markers, crayons or even your fingers can do wonders . However, keep in mind to always keep these tools close by so you can quickly grab them when needed during the creative flow of your ideas.
